Restaurants in the Most Spectacular Locations

Fine dining isn’t only about the food. Fresh ingredients expertly prepared will deliver a good meal, but it’s the ambiance that makes the tout ensemble of the world’s best restaurants a true experience. These eateries offer up great cuisine in spectacular and unusual locations.

Sani Mountain Lodge

Lesotho is a tiny kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa. It sits at the top of the Drakensberg Mountains, nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. Lesotho’s rugged and undeveloped mountain beauty lure thousands of visitors every year and for those who approach from the south, the Sani pass is the only gateway. The Sani Mountain Lodge is a hotel and restaurant right on the border at the top of the Sani pass. The lodge itself, while not exactly modest, is not an opulent building, but its rustic charm is second to none. After a day bumping along miles of potholed gravel road, the rich wood and leather dining room lit by the flickering light from the stone fireplace is the perfect place to relax. The area above and behind the horseshoe bar is papered with currency from-the bartenders claim-every country on earth. But, it’s the view that makes the Sani special. The lush green valley with its lattice-work labyrinth of streams stretches out before you all the way to the horizon. Enjoy it over a traditional meal of oxtail soup with a glass of port.

El Diablo

For most restaurants, energy costs make up about 5% of the total operating budget. At El Diablo on Lanzarote Island, they’re saving money by heating their grill with magma. Lanzarote is a volcanic island off the coast of Morocco, and the westernmost portion of the island is a national park where geysers and lava have shaped the landscape over eons. El Diablo is in a circular building atop one of the many volcanoes. It has 360 degrees of windows offering panoramic views of the Fire Mountains. The real draw is the grill that sits over a deep vent into the earth. The volcano hasn’t erupted in nearly two centuries, but the vent still pumps out air at 450 degrees. Treat yourself to geothermal-grilled pompano with a bottle from the restaurant’s fine selection of Spanish wines.

Ithaa

The Maldives sit like a string of pearls in the Indian Ocean, 500 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. This tropical Eden has been a go-to destination for the wealthy for years, and it is no stranger to extravagance. Hilton hotels took the luxury to new heights – or rather, depths – when they built the world’s first underwater restaurant. Ithaa sits five meters below the waves and is made of transparent acrylic. Diners are surrounded by the abundant life of the shallow sea and can enjoy a meal of tuna sashimi while selecting from the Hilton’s wine cellar with over 1,400 labels. It only seats 14 people, and due to the engineering issues of being submerged, it’ll only be around for 20 years. It would be one of the least profitable restaurants in the world if an average dinner didn’t cost $450.

Whether you’re at the roof of Africa or beneath the waves, a visit to one of these unusual restaurants is an experience not to be missed.

Hotel Nacional De Cuba – A Classic With a Thousand Stories

Maybe you, interested in the values Havana has to offer as a destination in the Caribbean, already know or have read about the insignia institution of all Cuba hotels; The Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Perhaps you know about it's architectonic particularities, of its formidable and elevated location in front of the sea, of its competitive services and, it is possible, you may even recognize it's almost 80 years of experience providing service, and of it being the preferred accommodation of all the famous people that have visited the major of the Antilles.

Inaugurated in the end of 1930, Hotel Nacional de Cuba has guided many comments and its goodness has traveled around the globe.

But even if you are a connoisseur of the Island, it is highly improbable that you know many of the stories this eclectic building keeps. Of hardly one of these stories I will be sharing with you in this, my first article for the Cuba Travel Blog.

I will begin by telling you that the Hotel Nacional could today stand in a totally different place … Its actual location is in fact what most identifies this hotel within the urban map of Havana. The hotel is located in the coastal outgoing land of Punta Brava, in the highest position of the Taganana hill, almost at the extreme of the Caleta de San Lázaro. This location use to be a regular place for pirate ship territories during the XVII and XVIII centuries, reason why the Spanish metropolis chose the position to establish the famous Canon Battery of Santa Clara, of which some relics can still be found in the hotel gardens. But as mentioned before it could have been built in another location.

It was the second decade of the past century and Havana was in need of a luxurious hotel. It should be noted that by this time, Cuba already received some 60 thousand tourists a year. The President of The Republic was Gerardo Machado and in his Cabinet of Ministers outstands a man that in time and with his endeavors in charge of the Public Works during the governance of Gerardo Machado, would gain himself the name of "The Intrepid". We are referring to Carlos Miguel de Céspedes. It was this man who most boosted the idea of building the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

An immediate reaction isose from several interested investors. The American Casa Morgan pressured the government of Machado to allow them to build and operate this hotel. A delegation of American bankers and entrepreneurs was in Havana in these days headed by Mr. Brownson, president of the Purdy & Henderson construction company. Its members had interviews with Mr. Céspedes and manifested that if the government were to yield the grounds of the ancient Havana Jail, the company would build a magnificent hotel of 500 rooms. It was the intention of these men to build the hotel more to what was the center of Havana, just by the entrance of the Havana Bay, so that the future hotel would face the lighthouse of the Castillo del Morro.

Carlos Miguel told the Americans that this location could not be used for the project since the government had already designed these grounds to the construction of the Palace of Justice, which plans had already been delivered by the Foresturers famous French planner; Céspedes had a better place in mind.habana-hotel-nacional.jpg

Mr. Brownson reacted in fury and faced the Minister. Out of control, he told him that he would accept no other spot than the one he had requested. When Céspedes realized he was being pressured he called the construction company president a "zoquete" (blockhead) and told him it was impossible for them to do any business at all. When the other members of the American delegation noticed that the Minister was not someone that could be "blackmailed", they intervened managing to calm both men and, a while later, they all agreed to visit the location that the Cuban representative had in mind and was willing to offer.

A while later Céspedes would tell the story to the press in the following words:

"When Mr. Browson got to the location, there, to the ancient Canon Battery of Santa Clara, he was speechless.

The contract for the construction of the hotel was even auctioned, at least apparently, and was won by Purdy & Henderson who also represented the interests of the Hotel Plaza in New York and the Morgan House. 3 million pesos would be invested in the hotel.

Another proof of intransigence was presented by Carlos Miguel when he proposed that in the contract it should be very clear that only the Cuban Flag was to flutter in the property. This determination would provoke yet another incident. These were times when the American flag would wave in the official buildings by the Cuban flag.

The day of the signature of the contract gathered what was the high society of the time in Havana with president Machado. While the contract was read Céspedes noted that the case he had asked for had been omitted and, to President Machado's surprise, Carlos Miguel tore the contract in pieces demanding a new contract where it would be clear that only the Cuban Flag would flutter by the hotel .

This story, related to the beginnings of the installation, is only one of many that the hotel treasures. So, when visiting this property and enjoying the privileged view of the Havana coastline, you will now know how the location was argued and finally established. With stories like this one, we will be back very soon. For now I say goodbye to you all.

The ABC'S of Sailing in Palma De Mallorca

Setting sail from Palma de Mallorca – How to get there?

Amongst other reasons, a Mallorca yacht charter is so incredibly popular because of the easy accessibility of its international airport from all major European destinations. There are hundreds of daily flights coming in during the summer, making it a real hub for sailors and seasoned yachties from all over the world. In addition, the airport is a mere 9 km away from the capital `Palma`, as it is simply known to the inhabitants.

Its favorable location in the western Mediterranean Sea sets this gorgeous island and the surrounding Balearics in the immediate vicinity of the Spanish mainland and the port cities of Barcelona, Valencia and Denia. Often sailors will use Palma as a resting point when crossing the Mediterranean. The area is a great cruising ground for yacht rental because of the diversity of the different islands that make up the Balearics. Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca are reachable within only one sailing day. Yet they each offer something completely different in terms of culture, landscape and atmosphere.

Which marinas in and around Palma de Mallorca are there for a motor or sailing yacht charter?

There are some very established and some pristine new marinas to choose from for your yacht charter in Mallorca. The yacht harbors in Palma itself are offering quite a lot of both, luxury and bareboat charter, where the exclusive marinas of Puerto Portals, Port Adriano and Puerto Andratx are perfectly suited for luxury boat charter in Mallorca. In Palma there is the Club de Mar, La Lonja Marina Charter, the Real Club Nautico and the Marina Naviera Balear. A lot of day charter, especially for motor yachts, is available here. Very nice as well is the newly redone `Muelle Viejo` directly adjacent to the magnificent Cathedral. There are some fantastic new restaurants right opposite which even brings you some take away on board. There you can then sit on your own deck for dinner, enjoy the enchanting view of the lit up cathedral and feel the pulse of the vibrant center of the city. Puerto Portals is only a 10 minutes' drive away and has long been renamed as a prime port for luxury yacht charter Mallorca. If you sit in the restaurant `Flannagans`, for example, you may even be table neighbors with the likes of the King of Spain or Rafael Nadal. And Port Adriano (about 20 min drive from the city center) with its cutting edge design by Philippe Starck is a true superyacht harbor with the flair of sober elegance, yet undeniable beauty.

What has Palma de Mallorca got to offer for après sailing?

Now you may have come here for sailing holidays, but there is way more to do if you only know where and when … Not a day goes by in Palma that there is not some sort of party or event. From January to December, there's always something going on here. If you have not attended it yet, seeing the Three Kings arrive in the port on the Spanish Christmas day, January 6, is a sight to behold. And in the end of January there is a whole week of festivals called San Sebastian. Numerous life bands play in the streets, you can `run with the devils` or join in for the huge barbecue at the very end of the week. In summer you can pick your choice of regattas: Be it the Superyacht Cup in June, the Princessa del Rey in July or the Copa del Rey in August.

Downtown Palma is wonderful to behold, as is the old quarter. You'll find the overall architecture is a blend of the intricate eastern style and the imposing western style. The famous Palma Cathedral, commonly referred to as' La Seu' is second to none in the world. Also a must is the impressive Castell de Bellver that towers over Palma and boasts some unbelievable views over the whole bay.

Apart from seeing the abundant sights, sampling the local specialties like the famous Sobrasas sausages or the popular `lomo' (pork loin) along with some Mallorquin wine is a pure joy.

Shopping facilities for souvenirs or in preparation for your yacht charter in Palma de Mallorca are plentiful. Just head to the big department store El Corte Ingles (they have a luxury delicatessen department too) or to the shopping mall Porto Pi that is situated just around the corner from Club de Mar. You can purchase fresh produce in abundance in the centrally located Santa Catalina market during the mornings. And in the Old Town and the city center there is an endless array of gorgeous boutiques and shops for you to choose from.

The nightlife is splendid; you just need to head down to the water towards the promenade known as Paseo Maritimo. There you'll find the best clubs, bars and terraces, all overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and all packed full with happy yacht charter visitors.

What are the best day charter trips from Palma de Mallorca?

Off course Palma is the heart of Mallorca, yet it isn't everything there is … By car you can do many excursions, head into the spectacular Tramuntana mountain range and visit some of the overwhelmingly charming little villas there. Deia, Valdemossa or Puerto de Soller are just a few names you should remember. There is a very cute, over 100-year-old train that goes from Palma to Soller and from there you can take the equal quaint tram to the port. A recommendable trip on the water would be going on a guided tour to the island of Cabrera, which is also a nature reserve. On the way they will tell you a lot about the interesting history as well as the fauna and flora of this place. Go swim in caves with crystal clear water and soak up the Mediterranean sun. A day yacht charter, most likely on a motor yacht from Palma would be another option to go there. One of those motor yacht charter boats can fit up to 6 to 8 people and you get a skipper to take you to the island, where you can snorkel or dive and admire the unspoilt underwater world.

How to Travel Around the World on a Low Budget

Travelling is something that everyone desires and loves. And to travel around the world is a dream come true for people. But everyone has the same sob story, which is that people don’t have the budget for such an expensive trip. And thus, they eventually have to cancel their travel plans.

Who says you cannot travel the world on a low budget? Of course you can! You just need to make a few changes in your schedule and plans, and it would totally work. You can then travel all over the world easily.

Accommodation

The first and foremost and the most important money saving tool is that you need to find the perfect place to live which is not at all expensive, plus totally comfortable. SO try not to book hotels when you go out, and swap them for hostels or workaways. Workaways are usually where people can work for small businesses or other families, and in exchange they would get free food as well as housing.

Another great way to save money on accommodation is to try couchsurfing. And if you are not comfortable with this, then you could just stay in large hostel dorm rooms. And you could even share your space with a local, which is even more exciting. Camping too is another great way to save money on accommodation, and not just that, you’ll have loads of fun and adventure if you go camping.

Airline Ticket

A round the world airline ticket is purchased through an Airline Alliance, and this of course makes it easier to travel rather than buying individual tickets for every location. This helps you save a huge amount of money.

Apart from this, there are a lot of other ways to earn free flights, if you really are keen on travelling. What you could do is just sign up for a few travel credit cards, through which you could collect miles and hola, you could easily travel for free. This is mostly for amazing destinations like Central America, Europe, Australia and Scandinavia.

Eat Street Food

We know that a part of everyone loves street food, so then why should you try and east expensive foods from high end restaurants when you could easily do with the street foods. Food consumes a major portion of your budget and if you cut it down then it would be really advantageous to you.

So the best way is to talk to the locals there, and learn more about their customs, traditions and famous street foods. Ask about what are the things that are a must try and do try all the customary street foods.

Give up your phone plan

It’s pretty expensive and hard to use a sim card when you are travelling abroad, since you need to take sims for every single destination. Thus, it is better if you just a hotspot or wifi in a café to connect to the people at home. Thanks to WhatsApp and Facebook adding call and video chat features, you don’t really need to invest hefty amounts in additional sim cards.

Download apps for budgeting

It may seem weird, but you do need to keep track of all your expenses. Budgeting apps help you in keeping a tab, even if it may be for the smallest of expenses, say even buying a subway ticket. Trust us, all those subway tickets, and small knick knacks add up to a lot.

Even though you may not be spending a lot on big things, but small spending’s in bulk are also pretty heavy on the pocket.

Use Public Transportation

Using public transport is not only cheaper, but also the best way to know about a city. Taxis are especially expensive, and a cheaper alternative could be to rent a car for a few days. This way you can easily travel according to your own whims and fancies, and its so much more fun too. Just try and search for the best car rental deals, and you would be able to get ample of them. And if you’re fond of bikes, then you can rent a bike too and explore the city.

Try taking buses, or hitchhike with people. Make a tourism card, which would offer you great discounts as well as free access to famous attractions as well as museums, plus public transportation too. The London Pass, or the Paris Museum card are some examples of passes which you should totally get.

Drinks – Especially water!

Order drinks only in places where there are great discounts. Alcohol in some countries is not very expensive, so you could easily drink wine and beer. And if you are in a large group, see that you split all such expenditures with everyone.

Plastic bottles of water can be really expensive, thus you can try drinking from the tap. A great hack is using a Steripen to purify your water wherever you go. That ways you wouldn’t even have to buy such costly bottles every time, and this would just be a onetime investment.

Plan your destination first

First plan your budget, and then plan your trip. A small budget would mean less months in countries like Europe, but mean more time in probably South America. And if you travel in India, its obviously way more cheaper. Thus, its important to plan your travel dates, and it is recommended that you go in the off season, so that you save a lot of money on travel and living..

So, planning a budget trip just requires some effort, but it can easily happen. Try to hike more, go to free museums, walk more and try to explore the place rather than spending huge amounts in clubs, which you could do anywhere. You can even teach English overseas, as that’s one of the best way to make some extra bucks to travel. And once you’ve collected enough, then don’t think twice, just book it right away and fly off. Because, however clichéd it might sound, but you only live once!

Cost Vs Value When Booking a Vacation

When it comes to saving money on a trip – when is the value of using a travel agent worth paying a little more than the price you find online?

Unlike booking online, when you book with a travel agent, you are getting much more service than you will with an online agency. Our job doesn’t end when we deliver your tickets to you – it continues with our assistance while you are traveling and when you get home. How you may ask?

Here are a few examples of actual client travel problems that the value of using a travel agent outweighed booking by themselves.

We booked a family on a vacation package to Cabo. They had connecting flights and called us because their first flight leaving was delayed by several hours, causing them to miss their connecting flight. They called us from the airport because they were concerned that the company that their transfers were through would not be at the airport to pick them up. We contacted the supplier who changed the flight times and made sure the transfer company had the new information.

Clients from Georgia were supposed to fly Feb. 13, 2010 to San Juan for a cruise leaving at 10 PM on Feb. 14. At 8 AM on Feb. 13 they called us in a panic. It was snowing, their flights were canceled and the airline told the clients they would not be able to fly them out until Monday.

Thankfully they could drive to Florida and we found flights on another airline Feb. 14 that would get them to the cruise ship with plenty of time to spare. We canceled their San Juan hotel, found a hotel in Orlando for her that would allow them to park their car for free for the duration of the cruise and shuttle her back and forth to the airport. Our client said if she had booked this on her own, she would not have known what to do and would have been heartbroken at not being able to travel. Since she had also purchased travel insurance, we started a travel delay claim for her to be reimbursed for the difference in the flight prices, plus her expenses for gas, tolls and meals to get back and forth to the Orlando airport. The forms were waiting for her when she arrived back from her cruise.

A few years ago, we had clients who had booked a trip and canceled their trip a month before the date they were to leave for a reason that was not covered by travel insurance. The supplier was adamant that the cancellation was non-refundable. We interceded and were able to obtain a partial credit to book another trip within one year so the client did not lose all their money.

Today a client sent us a price quote for a vacation to Punta Cana asking if we could beat the price. She priced the vacation with connecting flights from Philadelphia and on her return, she chose a flight that left Punta Cana at 7 AM. We asked her if she realized that to make that return flight home she would have to be at the airport by 4:30 AM to ensure she would have enough time to get through Security. She had no idea she would have to be at the airport that early. Not only did we beat the price, we found her direct flights for less than she was quoted through the online agency and her return flight left at 1:05 PM.

What other value do we provide when you book with us that you won’t get from booking online? We send you destination information, advise you of the documentation you need to travel, give information on optional excursions, send you helpful hints and last minute reminders and we are available 24 hours if you have a problem while you are traveling as evidenced above. We follow up with you when you return and if there was a problem that needs to be addressed with a supplier, we will get involved to try and find a satisfactory resolution.

Is this kind of service worth paying a little extra for?

Las Vegas Job Openings Have Higher Pay

Anyone able to snag a Las Vegas job opening is likely to get paid more than workers in most other cities. A recent report from Forbes used data from PayScale to rank the income of workers in the 100 largest metro areas throughout the country. The Las Vegas area was ranked 15th, with the city’s median pay increasing 13.9 percent from $51,500 in 2005 to $58,700 in 2009.

El Paso, Texas, was ranked first, as the city’s median income increased by 19.4 percent to $49,100.
continental airlines official site
On the other end of the scale, Harrisburg, Pa., was ranked last, with the city’s median pay decreasing by.74 percent to $50,600.

Other cities close to Las Vegas that have been having economic trouble also placed well on the list. Phoenix was ranked 10th, with the city’s median pay increasing by 15 percent to $61,100, while Bakersfield, Calif., was ranked second, as the city’s median income increased by 18.5 percent to $60,900.

The report noted that in some cities, high unemployment may actually correlate to an increase in median pay.
kayak flights
Even though a company may lay off a large number of staff numbers, the people left behind are usually in higher-paid positions, which causes the overall average salary to increase.

Although it appears as though the Las Vegas economy is improving, many experts say a recent decrease in the city’s unemployment rate is only a result of a shrinking workforce.
frontier airlines official site
In keeping with that theory, the city has continued to see a monthly and yearly decrease in employment.

During November, the Las Vegas-Paradise area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 13 percent to 12.1 percent, following a decrease from 13.9 percent during October. Despite the decrease, the area’s current rate is still higher than the national unemployment rate of 10 percent.

The Las Vegas area had a total non-farm employment of 843,100 workers during November, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 851,900 workers during October and a 6.7 percent decrease from last year.

This kayaking tour can be as short as one day or if one is so inclined it is possible to spend days exploring the various treaties of the Rio Serrano and then arrive at Last Hope Sound. The Geike and Tyndall tribunals are quite touching, challenging and exhilarating.

Covering the W Circuit on foot is a good idea but if this is challenging then one of the best experiences of the Torres Del Paine can be on horseback. One can hire horses and go explore the Fjord Trail for three days that takes the route of the wetlands and the Paine Massif. Another option is the Glacier Ride to Glacier Dickson, camp at nights and have a wonderful time on horseback. Equally enticing is the Gauchos trail that takes you to the Glaciers across beautiful wooded areas, a trip to remember. If one wishes to mix luxury with horseback riding then there is the option to cover stretches on one day and the rest your sore body in a spa and bed down comfortably for the night in hotels.

An alternate way to go about exploring Torres Del Paine is to hire a mountain bike and explore the Carretas trail and pedal past the Laguna Azul, explore Milodon cave and traverse the Oggioni Pass.

One of the better and most favored ways to enjoy Torres Del Paine is on foot and to places less explored. Trekking in the Bader Valley is a different experience as the route takes one to the back of the Towers and one can view it from a different angle. This and the Forgotten Valleys trek should be on the short list of trekkers who wish to do more than just follow the beaten track.

The route is more or less the same. How one chooses to explore it makes it different and exciting.
