Philippine Travels – Recommended Destinations for Solo Travelers

Traveling, for most people, is a social activity. We travel with family and friends. We travel with colleagues from the office, or even with acquaintances with what we have the same interests. There are times, however, when nobody in our circle shares our thirst for travel. In such cases, we can either travel alone or do not travel at all. For the real travel-bugs, the second is not an option at all.

A lot of people travel by themselves for this reason. Rather than end the company of strangers in tour groups, for example, solo travelers prefer to make it on their own, loving the freedom of making choices and changing them, of going to a place and leaving early or staying late, and especially of getting to know and chatting up with people one would not normally talk to if one were not alone.

The Philippines is Friendly to Solo Travelers

The Philippines is one of those places which welcome and is generally hospitable to voluntary travelers. There are a lot of destinations in the country that are conducive for solo travels, maximizing the traveler's experience of a different culture. The locales are generally friendly to foreigners, and there are many man-made and natural attractions that are not usually frequented by tourists.

Below are some of the ideal solo destinations from each major island in the Philippines, from Luzon, to Visayas and even in Mindanao.

Visit the Ancient Churches and Eat Local Delicacies in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur

Located in Northern Luzon, these two provinces are flocked by travelers who are after capturing ocean views, old churches, World Heritage sites and glorious natural attractions. Its offer of delectable vegetable cuisines such as pinakbet, local delicacies like bagnet and the famous empanadang Vigan has also made it a favorite destination for food enthusiasts.

Depending on one's schedule, these two provinces can be combined in a single trip as they are only 2.5 hours away from each other by public transport. The fastest way is to take a plane from Manila to Laoag. From there, the 45-meter Sinking Bell Tower is easily accessible. Nearby also is the St.. William Church built in the Spanish era, one of the largest churches in the Philippines.

Vigan, the capital of Ilocos Sur, can be easily reached from Laoag. It is well-known for Calle Crisologo (Crisologo Street), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Calle Crisologo is a half-kilometer street lined up with houses showingcase architecture dating from the era of Spanish colonization. Numerous souvenir shops filled with local crafts also line the area. For a more enjoyable experience, walk around street or hire a calesa, a horse-drawn carriage, to go around town.

Walk the Longest Bridge in the Philippines in Leyte

Leyte in the Eastern Visayas boasts of historical places, man-made structures, and natural resources that are sure to interest the solo traveler. The locales are used to seeing backpackers in their province, and if you stop by, be prepared to be asked all sorts of questions.

One option to cover more ground is to join a government-organized group tour called the Icot Icot (Going Around). Its itinerary includes a stopover at the Provincial Capitol, Leyte Park Hotel, Madonna Shrine, Sto. Nino Church and Shrine, MacArthur Memorial Shrine, as well as the downtown area.

San Juanico Bridge-at 2.16km, the longest bridge in the Philippines-is also included in the itinerary. It connotes the provinces of Leyte (via Tacloban) and Samar (Sta. Rita side). A walkway is located on both sides where one can safely enjoy the unparallel views of the island life below.

Also a foodies' destination, Leyte offers a wide range of offerings from its local delicacies such as binagol, chocolate moron, sagmani and Carigara's pastillas, to international dishes.

Travel Solo in the Philippines

These are just a few of the solo traveler-friendly destinations in the Philippines. Aside from being easily accessible to Manila or Cebu City, there are various accommodation options catering to both the luxury traveler and the ubiquitous backpacker. Development has also worked up in these places; you can easily find ATMs, international fast food chains, and WIFI areas in these destinations.

Though not every aspect of solo travel is appealing-it would be good to share your reactions with another person, for example, or to split the fees for the ride or accommodation with someone else-the benefits of going alone oftentimes desires for those who love doing it.

Solo traveling fosters independence, provides flexible travel schedule, and gives opportunity for one to get to know oneself. For in going alone to a strange, new destination, you have no one else to rely on but yourself, and sometimes you discover through solo travel that you are stronger than you think you are.

And because of the threatened state of the cloud forests, because of poaching and recent invasion of their habitat, these animals are in serious danger of becoming extinct.

Monteverde is also known to be a wonderful destination with families with children. Being a "cloud forest", the shiny green of the forest is often always covered with mist and soft rain blankets, making the ambience peaceful and awe-inspiring, only interrupted with constant hum of birds and monkeys speaking to one another. A very popular attraction of the Monteverde Forest is the canopy tours. A very common one is known as Sky Walk. Travelers get to see the forest at a whole new level; above it. Walking along a suspension bridge at their own pace, visitors will get to see wildlife essentially invisible from ground level and the scurrying of different animals along the tops of trees. For those more inclined towards a faster and more action packed attraction, Sky Trek is perfect for them. Put on a helmet, strap on the harness and hold on tight as you zip down a cable flying through the Costa Rican forest. A fun and perfectly safe activity, toddlers as young as 4 years old can even participate. Those who have used this way of traversing the forest have described as is nothing short of magical. Many come to Costa Rica simply to try it as it comes highly recommended.

Other attractions of Monteverde include: Ranario (Frog River), Butterfly Garden, Night Tours, and Horseback riding.

A Divided Skirt Which Finds Popularity Among Chicago Horsewomen

July 11, 1895, El Paso Times, El Paso, Texas – Emancipation from skirts is one of the privileges that the advanced woman has long been contending for, and the prevailing popularity of bicycling and other outdoor exercises for women gives a sudden and considerable impetus to that long delayed reform.

Bloomers and divided skirts no longer excite wonder when seen on the highways, and the day when the horsewoman may ride astride man fashion without fear of criticism is at hand.

The sidesaddle has always been a serious handicap, and Miss Woods, an enterprising Chicago woman, has invented a costume which enables her to discard it without derogation of her womanly modesty and dignity.

The lower garment of this costume may be called a divided skirt, but actually it resembles a pair of very wide trousers.

The two skirts, each a third of a yard in width, are fastened in a belt at the waist, and gathered in a row of plaits at the middle of the front and back.

These plaits give the divided garment the appearance of a single skirt, and the fullness of each skirt at the bottom completes the illusion.

A panel almost as wide as the apprentice width of the skirt falls on each side, from the belt almost to the foot, which adds to the effectiveness and conventional appearance of the costume when the wearer is astride a horse.

The improvement claimed for this costume over the ordinary divided skirt is that there is no clumsy fullness at the bottom. The skirt hangs straight, and is no wider than an ordinary riding habit. It displays less of the contour of the figure than the regular costume used with the sidesaddle.

Miss Woods introduced the innovation as a result of her experience in Palestine.

After much discomfort and several mishaps in riding in a dilapidated sidesaddle, she one day boldly thread her leg across the horse's back and rode that way all day before any one discovered her.

Then she refused to ride any other way. All the Arabian women ride astride, and she followed the custom of the country during the rest of her stay there.

With the remembrance of the comfort experienced on that trip she decided to adopt man's fashion in Chicago, and did so, with the result that her example is being followed by a large and increasing number of women in the Windy City.

Tips For Opening A Gas Station In El Paso

El Paso, Texas, is a unique city that intersects three states – Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua – and two countries– the US and Mexico! It has been marked, as an area where ozone levels have exceeded federal limits, since operating a gas station in El Paso requires the station to operate and maintain a Stage II vapor recovery system.

How to Start a Gas Station in El Paso:

Starting a gas station in El Paso, Texas, could be a great idea. If the establishment is under good management, it could be a very rewarding business.

It will be necessary to consider the type of gas station you want to open, a premium or a discounted brand. Consider if it will be a full-service station – where attendant checks oil levels, tire pressure, wipes the windshields and collects the payment – or a self-service – where the customers operate the pump themselves – or a mini- service station – where the attendant pumps oils and collections payments. Consider if you will have a convenience store too, car wash, sometimes toilet facilities, or if you will sell liquor and lottery tickets too. Decide if you will consider a franchise, or a coalition with a premium brand.

Select an appropriate legal structure and register a business name. Make sure you get all required licenses and permits such as:

o Air permits by rule

o LPG gas license

o Tax permits

o Weighing / measuring device permits

o Petroleum storage tank registration

o Vehicle inspection registrations

o Environmental regulations

o Industrial waste-water and storm water regulations

o Grease and grit trap waste disposal

o Petroleum-contaminated soil disposal

o Stage II vapor recovery requirements

o Tire storage regulations

o Used / scrap tires

o Private well or public water system

Estimate start-up costs as well as the initial operating costs, and have the necessary funds ready, possibly by applying for a loan. Have a cash flow projection drawn to help regulate the cash flow.

The location has to be appropriate where there is a demand for the service, and the gas station has to be visible, in a high-traffic area sometimes. A long-term lease will be recommended.

Carefully select the equipment, making sure it complies with the state rules such as Stage II vapor recovery system in the pumps. Estimate the number of staff needed and hire the appropriate candidates carefully. Monitor their services and ensure that the cash collected is secured by good high-tech systems. Typically, the cashier's cabinet is bulletproof. Decide on the types of services you will provide and the times of the service.

Advertise and market your station by placing ads in the newspaper. Offer something free if they visit and use your services such as a free car wash.

You could use the software and products available to help run a business better, thereby being able to manage it better, too. These are a few tips for starting a gas station in El Paso, Texas.

DAMS.

The movement to build a dam on the Rio Grande started as early as 1896 but the plan was fraught with difficulty, not the least of which was the international implication of diverting water from Mexico. A water rights treaty was worked out on both sides of the border in 1906 and the Elephant Butte Dam, now a state park near Truth or Consequences, was completed a decade later. The concrete dam is one of the earliest and most important linchpins in the Bureau of Reclamation's overall plan for water in the West. Not as ornate, but a few years older, is the Leasburg Dam.

FORTS.

Camp Furlong, in the border town of Columbus, New Mexico, was the staging ground for General John "Black Jack" Pershing and his 10,000-man Punitive Expedition to hunt down Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa in 1916. Pershing invaded 400 miles intoMexico but never caught Villa. Several buildings remain from Camp Furlong in Pancho Villa State Park: a rec hall, camp headquarters and the judge advocate's office among them.

FOSSILS.

The Robdelo Mountains contain an abundance of well-preserved vertebrate and invertebrate tracks from the early Permian age 286 million years ago. Marine fossils are common on Crazy Cat Mountain trails.

GRAVES.

Concordia Cemetery contains 65,000 of them and you are welcome to tour this historic ground with your dog. The most famous gravesite, of Texas gunslinger John Wesley Hardin, was not even marked until 1965 – 70 years after his death.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS.

The entire town of Lincoln, New Mexico is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a survivor of the bloody Lincoln County Wars. You and the dog can trace the events that turned an ordinary, unimpressive 17-year old William Bonney into the immortal "Billy the Kid."

OLD MINES.

The only tin mines on the North American continent can be found in Franklin Mountain State Park. You and the dog will stand and peer into these historic treasure troves. More dangerous are the abandoned mines on the east side of Bishop Cap.

RELIGIOUS ICONS.

Mt. Cristo Rey is the spot where two countries and three states come together and the summit is graced with the largest limestone cross in America, carved painstakingly for a year on the top of the mountain.

ROCKS.

You may be lucky enough to find white Opal, Agate, quartz crystals or thunder-eggs, which may be cut open to reveal spectral minerals and formations inside. There is a fifteen-pound limit for rock fishermen here.

TELESCOPES.

A hike to the top of Tortugas Mountain in Las Cruces will bring you and the dog to a 61-centimeter telescope reflector in use for the last 25 years, creating one of the largest planetary archives available in the US It is currently being used to monitor storm systems on Jupiter.

VOLCANOES.

Hunts Hole and Kilbourne Hole are "maar volcanoes." They formed as a result of volcanic explosions, resulting from hot magma coming into contact with ground water or shallow surface water. This contact changed the surface water into steam, causing an explosion that blew volcanic glass and other material out of the ground. The black rock you see as you hike around the rim or descend into the crater is lava rock called Afton basalt.
