Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi

One out of the eight basilicas in India is the Santa Cruz Basilica located at the fort Kochi. This church is known for its impressive architecture of the gothic style and hence is an architectural heritage for India. It was constructed as a cathedral church for the Diocese of Cochin. The origin of this basilica can be traced back to the Portuguese and later the British demolished the structure and erected the present architectural structure in the year 1887.

History of Santa Cruz Basilica

On 24th December 1500 when the second fleet of the Portuguese missionaries under Pedro llvares Cabral arrived in the state they were warmly welcomed by the maharaja of Cochin, King Unni Goda Varma Tirumulpadu. But the king of the near province of Calicut, Zamorin was angered by the welcoming of the Christian missionaries by king Tirumulpadu and hence he declared war against him. But the commander of the Portuguese east India Company, Dom Afonso de Albuquerque reached Cochin in the year 1503 and defeated the oppositions of king Tirumulpadu. In return of the help from the Portuguese commander the king of Kochi cave permission to the Portuguese to build a fort at Kochi.

Later in the year of 1505 Francisco de Almeida the first viceroy of the Portuguese in India acquired rights to build a church at Kochi using stones and the mortar. Such construction was not allowed in the place as the materials used in construction were only permitted for the building of the royal palaces and the tasks in the state. Finally on the 3rd of the May in 1505 the foundation of the church was laid and finally after its completion it was named the "Santa Cruz".

The church became a center of spreading Christianity in the region and later in the year of 1558 with the efforts of Pope Paul IV, the church was elevated to the status of a cathedral and in the same time The Diocese of Cochin was also constructed and since Santa Cruz became a cathedral for the Diocese.

The Dutch attacked Cochin in the year 1663 and destroyed all the catholic constructions in the state but unfortunately the Santa Cruz cathedral and the St. Paul. Francis church managed to survive. The Dutch destroyed the catholic churches and the cathedrals and used them as a storehouse for their arms. But the fortune of the Santa Cruz could not shine when the British captured Cochin in the year 1795 and destroyed the cathedral. The only remaining symbol of the old cathedral is a single decorative pillar made up of granite stone.

Finally with the efforts of Bishop D. João Gomes Ferreira of Cochin the cathedral was re- identified. Later Pope John Paul II put in efforts to reserve the artistic dignity and the historical significance of the cathedral and the finally the Santa Cruz cathedral got elevated to a status of Santa Cruz basilica in the year 1984.

While you could stay wherever you want and still see the whole valley, you're more likely to have an enjoyable experience by basing you stay according to your must-see destinations and attractions – or planning planning your trip in one of the cities that lie in between. Calistoga
Calistoga on the northern tip of the valley has an old west town feel, famous for its mud baths that were once the main reason that visitors headed to Napa Valley. It was discovered by the Wapoo Indians centuries ago but was developed into a spa town in the 1860s.
